History of the OX List:
The OX List, founded in 1996 by Ryan Esposto (F’95), was initially a listserv (an e-mail distribution group) hosted by the University, which allowed members to send e-mails to everyone in the group with a single e-mail address. The e-mail address – no longer active – was oxlist-l@ecst.csuchico.edu.
In 2005, after nearly 10 years of regular use, the group had about 100 active members. The volume of e-mails warranted a better platform for the OX List – one that could, for example, allow members to limit the e-mails they received from the List. Jeremy Reither (F’95) and Ryan Esposto moved the group to Yahoo Groups in January, 2006.
Nearly every member from the old listserv registered on the new List, and then some. As of June 8, 2008 the new Yahoo Groups OX List has 161 members, and is as active as ever – with about 200 posts a month. Members can choose to:
- receive each individual e-mail
- receive a “daily digest” summary of e-mails sent
- receive no e-mails, and just check occasionally online for updates
The Eta Omega OX List is the core of the Alumni group. OX List members are the first to receive the annual Eta Omega Alumni Newsletter. It’s the first place the Alumni Board bounces ideas and announces events, and sometimes the only place where news about the Chapter and Chico is shared.
In 2007 the Active Chapter set up a similar group – “OX List Actives”: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oxlist-actives/
The OX List is more than an e-mail list. It’s a way to network…it’s a way to get other guys’ opinions…it’s a place to network…it’s a place to talk shit. Any topic is fair game – sports, politics, professional, technical, hobby, whatever. It’s all on there. It’s the best way to keep in touch with brothers, period.
